Nokia sets sights a little lower

Okay, when I said "lower," I meant, LOW, and Nokia is taking respectable measures, to put it nicely. The world's largest mobile phone maker just announced a 66% yearly drop in Q2 profit, as well as lowering its market share target for 2009. Nokia is definitely feeling the pressure from its closest rivals, Apple, RIM and Samsung, which coincidentally, lead the smartphone market.

This looks to really spell trouble for Nokia. They had actually expected their market share to rise in 2009, but it looks like they set their sights a little too high. Nokia had probably expected an increase in market share because of the successful launch of its flagship phone, the N97, but other than the S60 groupies, the N97 hasn't actually received critical acclaims... not even anywhere close. With their trump card, the N97, receiving bland reviews (probably because it was launch after its competitors with no real advantages or revolutionary features) and with nothing special being announced by Nokia, their troubles may have just began.

PS3 Slim in the Philippines?!

For the gamers out there, I'm sure you've already heard, the PS3 Slim has been spotted in the Philippines, coincidentally where we're from. I know, I know, we're late on the news, but I've actually been following a thread on the Pinoyps.com site (local PS3 forum) for updates and someone was actually supposed to check it out yesterday so I was hoping to wait for the news and post it here right away. But it seems that someone bought it before our contact could check it out.

For those who are still in the dark, news thus far is that the one who was selling it said it came from the States and now, the unit has been sold to someone for around P22k ($460), most likely to be re-sold at a much higher price (that's the way the Philippines works). A group of curious cats on the pinoyps.com forum have said that they will go today and look for it, finally validating whether or not this is a hoax.

BUT, since this is Vantage, it's never complete without our point of view... and I call BULLSHIT! Although I dont really need to explain myself, I will anyway. Some of my major arguments is that if it is indeed out, leaked, stolen or whatever, and is in the hands of someone out there, why hasn't Sony said anything? This news is out on probably all the major gaming sites, yet Sony has kept quiet. Why? Cuz its probably fake! If its already out and someone has it, how can Sony not acknowledge or confirm it when its already in someones hands? And out of all the places in the world for it to be leaked, why the Philippines? I mean no offense to our country, cuz after all, its my home too, but why not China, Japan or Korea? Correct me if im wrong, but aren't PS3's made in Japan or China? Why would it be leaked in the States and go as far as to be brought here?

Another argument is that hey, this is the Philippines, the land of fake stuff! There are PSP hand held look-a-likes that aren't real, Vii's, iPhones that claim to be iPhones but are fake, Nokia 6300's from China that hella look like the real deal, and even a Nokia N98.... yeah, N98, what the F#@K is that?! And for the guy who has it not to post pics or something on the net is also very suspicious.

Another thought is that it could be a "re-pack." What I mean by that is that someone got a hold of the fake/leaked casing from a few months ago, and just transfered the internals of the original PS3 into that one. Also maybe switching out the harddisk to a bigger one and making the power supply external, much like the PS2 Slim.

Anyway, I could go on and on about why I call this one a big hoax, but hey, I COULD be wrong. These are just my reasons why I don't think its real. I've gotta see it to believe it. Anyway, only time will tell, after those who have ventured to the land of the fakes to look for the coveted Slim PS3.

Headphones Inspired From Our Music.....

Nokia had recently asked for Bluetooth headphones whose designs were inspired from some of the most recognizable songs of today!

Songs that ranged from Daft Punk, to R&B's R. Kelly, and to the King of Pop himself, Michael Jackson.

Here's what they came up with:

Inspired by Daft Punk's "Robot Rock"

Inspired by R. Kelly's "I Believe I Can Fly"

Inspired by Michael Jackson's Free Willy Theme, "Will You Be There"

Now all of these look amazing if you ask me. I think that it's definitely a nice concept, and very original. But if I had to choose a favorite among the three, I would have to go with the Daft Punk inspiration. I myself am a fan of tech that look very futuristic, and those Daft Punk headphones are about as futuristic as you can get! Hahahaha! But don't get me wrong, I also think that the Michael Jackson inspirations look very cool and trendy! I think these headphones will be very popular with the younger demographic. My question is, how's the sound quality on these?

N97 Live pics

Here are some live pics of the upcoming Nokia N97 for those interested. I must say, its definitely looking suhweet!!! I didn't think it would be that small! I figured it would be around the same size as the Nokia E90. Either that or that dude's hands are freakin big! I can't wait to see the white one.

Its said to be the best phone running on the S60 platform to date. As mentioned before, its slated to be released early 2009 (which for me, should be Jan-March) though I'm somewhat doubtful of that. But then again... "early 2009" can be relative or mean early fiscal year 2009. But don't worry, we'll give you guys the heads up when it arrives at our shores!

And to Nokia, make sure you guys fix all the bugs before its release. We don't want your ever-so-famous first batch of buggy phones!

Nokia N97

Is Nokia finally going to take the full jump into our soon-to-be touch screen world of mobile phones? The 5800 was their first effort (which was already released in some countries), but got mediocre reviews, but this one looks promising (but actually, so did the 5800 haha!).

The N97 was just announced in Spain a few days ago during the Nokia World '08 event. This feature-rich handset is dubbed by some as the “Facebook Phone” mainly because this device is geared towards users who are into social networking and multimedia. Based on the specs though, this “handheld computer” device can also cater to the power/business user. But then again, here in the PI, who really cares about what the phone is originally or supposedly for?! Its all about what it can do, how it looks and what it says about the user. And this one looks great, its a high-end phone (for sure!) so not everyone is going to be able to buy it... horray for us!

Here are some of the more common specs...
  • 3.5″, 640 x 360 resistive touch screen
  • QWERTY keyboard
  • Tri-band HSDPA 3G
  • 802.11 b/g WiFi
  • A-GPS and Stand-alone GPS for directions and geo-tagging
  • 32GB Built-In Memory
  • microSD expansion support for ADDITIONAL 16GB
  • 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics
  • Flash Lite 3.0 support and Flash Video in web browser
  • Music player up to 36 hours playback time
  • Share and Ovi services support
For the complete phone specs, check out GSMarena.

Check out some video demos of the N97 here & here!

Verdict? Well, it really does look promising, especially for those who loved any of the previous communicator phones by Nokia. Its packed with features, looks-wise, is a definite head turner and for certain, a phone that confirms you're social stature. Though for me its still iPhone: 1 and all other phones: 0!

Nokie E63: Nokia's Blackberry-Alike Phone

"This Is So Going In My Blog."

This next post is for you all you people still looking for presents for your families and friends for christmas. Nokia has just recently released their E63. The E63 is based on their previous model, the E71. The aim is to introduce the QWERTY keyboard to a wider market for a reasonable price. This candy colored Blackberry look-alike is designed to meet the business needs of the businessmen of the world. You'll be able to switch between corporate email/calendar mode and personal email/websites/photo mode. It also comes with 1GB of cloud file storage on Ovi so users will always have access to some of their files, and has Wi-Fi connectivity. We also know it has a camera, 3.5-mm audio jack and is in blue or red but Nokia's not revealed much else about its innards. Debuting in Europe for around $250.

I personally think this phone looks great. I love the idea that it comes in his/hers colors. I thought the E71 was a great design, so it's definitely a plus for me that the E63 looks similar to that. Now whether or not this will be worth getting, we'll have to wait for a hands-on review for that. But it's definitely looking like a great present for the holidays!

Nokia 5800: XpressMusic

"This Is So Going In My Blog,"

With this next post,  I remember the days when I was obsessed with Nokia. I thought the dudes from Nokia were awesome, with every phone they released becoming a hit! On the top of my head, if I were to count the amount of Nokia phones I had, I would have to say that I've had around 8 or 9. Nowadays, Nokia has been slowly slipping on their game with new competition such as Apple, Samsung, and many many more! Can they make a comeback?

Nowadays, touch screen is the craze and people can't get enough of it. Admit it, the only reason the iPhone has become so successful, is because of their introduction to touch screen tech. Now I know Nokia has been a little late to adapt to this, but here it is finally! Nokia is releasing their first touch screen handset, and it comes in the form of the Nokia 5800. Rumor has it that this nifty phone will be coming out during Nokia's "Comes With Music" launch. Since this is basically a music phone, you can expect to see features like Wi-Fi, and an 8gb SD card for the music. It'll also feature a GPS feature, and a 640x360 touchscreen. Rumored release date is October 2nd.

Vertu Signature Series 3G

Nokia's luxury brand Vertu, is giving its top of the line Signature Series, a much needed, refreshed design, packing 3G as well as WiFi (a first for Vertu) in its new slim shell. Sweet aint it? The Vertu finally gives the technophiles among us something to appreciate, especially when you factor in the extra little tidbit that it's apparently sporting an OLED QVGA display... which simply means a screen thats, brighter... crisper... and just flat out nicer than yours. Nothing is super official yet but the Signature Series has been long overdue for a makeover. I'm sure less than a handful of us can afford this, and those who can, probably wont shell out the cash for price Vertu's usually go for. But if you can and you do, drop me a line, I wanna see it!

Nokia 3610: Simple Fold

"This Is So Going In My Blog,"

A few days ago, Nokia announced their latest flip phone, "The 3610." The phone is a quadband (GSM 850/900/1800/1900) hands and features a 1.3 megapixel camera with a 6x zoom. It features a bright 2' screen an optional micro sd with up to 4gb, providing its owners enough memory to save their pictures, music, and videos. "The 3610" is scheduled to be released in the 3rd quarter of 2008, so make sure to keep an eye out for it. It's priced at about $186.00 so it should be pretty affordable. I think they sacrificed the 3g to be able to price it at this price.

Honestly, i think the phone looks really cool...but new phones are harder to appreciate these days with all the advancement in features that some phones are coming out with. If it ain't touch screen, I don't want it! Hahahaha! But to those who can appreciate a simple phone such as this, then I definitely recommend it for u guys!
